The Russian word “iskra”, translates into English as “spark”. As the name of our publication, the word “iskra” symbolizes the inner spiritual “spark” which Doukhobors believe to be the manifestation of God in each human being. In 1945, John J Verigin (the late Honourary Chairman of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ – USCC) suggested this name for the official USCC Newsletter (which had been published since 1943), to symbolize and encourage the on-going process of spiritual revival and growth among its readers.
