The Russian word “iskra”, translates into English as “spark”. As the name of our publication, the word “iskra” symbolizes the inner spiritual “spark” which Doukhobors¬†believe to be the manifestation of God in each human being.¬†In 1945, John J Verigin (the late Honourary Chairman of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ – USCC) suggested this name for the official USCC Newsletter (which had been published since 1943), to symbolize and encourage the on-going process of spiritual revival and growth among its readers.
